EXPERIMENTAL VISUAL RESEARCH: IPOFANIE
BY GIORGIO VIALI
PROJECT INTRODUCTION:
IPOFANIE is conceived as an experimental visual investigation—a minimal and fundamental creative experience—developed through remote collaborations. The content production is entirely remote, involving a co-creation process between actor/actress and director, focused exclusively on the video language.
OBJECTIVE AND METHODOLOGY:
The project explores the possibility of condensing and visualizing complex concepts through extremely simple, experimental visual manifestations. The outputs are video content distributed via social media, emerging from a dialogue between idea, presence, and form.
EXPERIMENTAL SETUP:
- Visual Minimalism: use of essential elements, basic shapes, signs, and interactions that suggest rather than depict.
- Distance and Remoteness: creation occurs without physical meetings, relying on digital tools and a process of visual and conceptual agreement.
- Interactivity and Adaptation: the content is developed as visual reactions of an open "system" capable of evolving and adapting to the present, imbuing sense through experimental form.
CONCEPTUALIZATION OF THE TERM IPOFANIE:
Starting from the Greek etymology (hypo = under, fania = appearance), IPOFANIE is conceived as a manifestation of lower rank—a "bottom-up" revelation. A visual hypothesis: images that emerge from a subordinate level, almost as an echo or shadow of a higher appearance, manifesting in a precarious and basic way.
In theological terms, hypopania represents the most intimate and personal angelic manifestation—an invisible apparition perceivable through sensations or subtle signs. Visually, it can be interpreted as a shadow, a faint light, an imperceptible movement that hints at presence without fully revealing it.
VISUAL APPROACH:
- Basic signs and symbols: geometric shapes, fine lines, variations in light intensity.
- Movements and pauses: simple video gestures suggesting revelations and unveilings.
- Remote interactions: the creative act as a dialogue between distributed visual elements, meeting and confronting each other in the digital space.
- Minimalism as inquiry: each element becomes a field of tension between presence and absence, between revelation and concealment.
CULTURAL AND CONCEPTUAL REFERENCES:
Hypopania, as a lower manifestation—an echo of a higher presence—becomes a fragile and precarious visual experience of revelation. The research focuses on how a simple image can evoke a sense of mystery and disclosure, stimulating interpretation and interaction by the viewer.
EXPERIMENTAL CONCLUSIONS:
The IPOFANIE project aims to serve as a platform for visual exploration, where form, duration, and gesture become tools for investigating concepts of apparition, revelation, and presence. The experimentation manifests through minimal editing techniques, basic visual compositions, and a language that emphasizes incompleteness and mystery.
